Rupert, who was tending to the cows, noticed her interest, smiled and asked, “Do you want to pet her?” “Do they like that? I’m more used to nasty jungle beasties.” She offers a gloved hand to the cow, though perhaps chemical-treated synthleather might not be the most comforting scent. “Are they… glowing? Is that normal here?”

“I thought sewer gaiters were common, though some argue it’s sewer crocs. I find it hard to believe someone would mistake the two,” Adela replies, her voice is very neutral, hiding if her words were a joke or if the Mordian was unfamiliar with the large reptiles referred to as crocs and gators. Cudjal stopped lacing his boots and paused for a moment. Deep was his thoughts of the Mordian's words. First and foremost being 'What the frak is a croc?!'. He had heard kids metion some sort of shoes that sounded similar to what the Mordian uttered, but the concept of a shoe with holes in it seemed like absolute nonsense to Cudjal. "No." Cudjal finally replied. "Sewer gaiters are a fool's idea and are basically impractical in the sewers. Though I agree with you on mistaking them for... Crocs? I mean, if I ever came across someone with Crocs in the sewers I would assume they are having the worse day of their life and are bigger fools than the guy with sewer gaiters. I'd even deem it a load of croc for that matter!" To emphasize the point at the end of his rant, Cudjal jerked his arms as he laced off his boot. That was when he finally heard the approaching sounds. He raised to his knee and retrieved his lasgun. Surely such a large crowd could only be something bad before the end of his shift.

Ilona stared forlornly at the approaching group. On Mordian, would they have been gunned down for approaching a gatehouse? Possibly.
But not here.
That idiotic man and his child were with them too. She suppressed a sigh of frustration, and then called out to the other guards that might not have seen the civilians. "Eyes up! Massed civilian formation approaching!."

If Treston understood anything about Gators and Gaiters or Crocodiles and Crocs, her face didn’t betray it. Instead she seemingly took Cudjal at his word, as he was the expert afterall.
Instead she was distracted by the large mass of people approaching. What was most concerning was the direction they were coming from. Not refugees from outside the city but those already inside. She expected it to mean one of two things. Either a large force was heading out, or this group needed something from them.
Normally, if it was the latter, it would be a bad thing. Either refugees come to protest or superiors coming to chew them out for some infraction. However, this seemed unlikely. Treston’s personal fear is that somehow a sickness had slipped through the gate and these people were being forced to leave, though that too seemed to not be right.
Keeping her weapon slung, but in easy reach. She steps forward as if to greet the leader of this…mob? Congregation? Collection of peoples? Adela wasn’t sure how to describe it as it didn’t fit what she viewed as an aggressive mob of protestors or a disciplined squad of soldiers.

However, mixed among the civilians in a clump of figures was the bases Lucifer Blacks in their fatigues at their head Luca held the sheet music as he seemed to be showing them notes. Clover, Sharps, Firefly, and Hammer grouped around Luca. For the first time they could be seen without helmets, Astora was younger looking than expected and small cut along his forehead the remnant's of close call with a Longlas in their recent outing. Next to the tall the Lucifer was one somehow slightly bigger than even Astora bit older looking, with rough tanned skinned unusual for a hiver he was bulky too, yet seemed intently listening to Luca's explanation of the notes as rubbed the back of his bald head, no doubt the ever quiet Hammer. Another young member the left half her face burned and robotic eye in place wore a sneer her half shaved blonde hair unkempt and messy clearly not the most willing to be here save for turning her head and gaining a blush on occasion, the smallest of the unit it seemed, Firefly, had some reputation as a spitfire. Clover was right next leaning in, no doubt the one she was blushing at as the glasses wearing guardsmen tried to look over Luca's sheet music, pale and of average build the glasses and brown haired mohawk... As well as an auspex strapped to his belt even here marked his a bit of technophile. Finally Sharps, her white hair back in a ponytail eyes darting along the walls these were Luca's command squad and here with them the technical highest ranking Lucifer along with what appeared to be most of the known unit mixed among civilians... Out singing where they could all be publicly seen and observed.
As they neared Luca waved, as Hammer hefted a canister, perhaps the size of a pony keg easily steam coiling off of it. "We bring tidings of cheer! ...Along with hot chocolate." Spoke the NCO with a grin trying to help the gate guards feel festive, Firefly even producing cookies she'd baked for the guards... With a bit of ribbing from the other Lucifer's finding out their pyromaniac could also bake. As soon the crowd of Lucifer's move to arrange itself a bit by section, and vocal skills as Luca had been explaining on the way over to make directing the music at least a little easier for their intrepid conductor.

Commissar Viers approached with the other Lucifers, though a step or two to the side. She was largely there as it was a Commissar’s duty to inspire morale in front of the troops and it would be improper for the command squad to show without the support of their Commissar. Though it should be noted, there was a large pile of paperwork back at the Lucifers’ barracks that Aspen had handed off to her aid before she left. Still she was glad to be able to participate, as it feels like a good team builder with her squad and a good way to connect with other guardsmen.
She adjusts her coat, and puts on her best smile. “The Emperor offers you seasonal greetings,” she says to the guards at the gate as they approach.

“Do they like that? I’m more used to nasty jungle beasties.” She offers a gloved hand to the cow, though perhaps chemical-treated synthleather might not be the most comforting scent. “Are they… glowing? Is that normal here?” “Yes! It’s so we can find them when it gets dark,” Rupert explained, encouraging Specialist Dekker to pet the cow who seemed nonplussed about the ordeal. After Prue dealt with the cow (supposedly petting it), there was a gentle thud to announce that the Tech-Priest set the wagon down. “Repairs complete. They should prove satisfactory,” he said. Rupert would nod. “Well, I won’t keep you. Thank you,” he said as he hitched his cows back up to the wagon. The Tech-Priest would turn to Prue and ask, “Are we finished? It seems your Guardsmen might need you.” "I'm good," Rupert said, hopping into his wagon, "Want to go in together?"

She adjusts her coat, and puts on her best smile. “The Emperor offers you seasonal greetings,” she says to the guards at the gate as they approach. Whether Specialist Treston, Trooper Bembenek, or Private Cudjal accepted the Lucifer Blacks’ (plus Commissar) offered goods and season’s greetings or not, once the Lucifers were done the mousy-haired preacher would turn toward the crowd, wave her staff in the air to gather their attention, then wave her hand as she started to sing. “Silent night,” the preacher would begin, and the rest of the crowd would join with, “Holy night.” Not every place, planet, or person has been blessed with having a consistent Ecclesiarchy presence, but all Guardsmen be they from Armageddon, Mordian, Haven’s Garden, or elsewhere have heard their sermons and songs. Candlemass was a widespread holiday, but not every place may know of it and what’s practiced here may not be quite how they do it. However, no matter how different it may be or someone’s personal feelings on the Ecclesiarchy or the Imperium, none can deny feeling touched in some way by a group of strangers getting together to sing. Even if one may not know what Candlemass is, as the carollers sang one might get an idea of what it means to the people of Haven’s Garden. In this moment the weariness of their burdens seemed to get a little easier as gentle hope, radiant cheer, and warm togetherness filled the air. The caroller would sing for the Guardsmen for about 15 minutes before bidding them farewell and happy Candlemass as they moved on to another gate. Thankfully for the Guardsmen, it continued to be a silent night until their shift finally came to an end and they were relieved of duty. Whatever they thought of serving as gate guard during one of the holiest of nights, hopefully the good deeds they did and the Candlemass cheer from the carollers can help them sleep in heavenly peace. ((This concludes Candlemass Gate Guard. Players may make a final post regarding what they did for the rest of their shift/night, their thoughts on what happened, reflect on what Candlemass means to them, or whatever else that seems relevant. If you have any questions or feedback, feel free to ask me in the OOC thread, messages, or Discord. Thank you all for participating in our first Semi-Canon event and hope you enjoyed it. Happy Candlemass!))

Cudjal went through several emotions or the course of this impromptu visit.
Firstly, fear. A large crowd approaching is never a good sign when one is on guard duty.
Next was confusion. Cudjal didn't know what a Lucifer black was, but to be showered with season well wishes and sweet treats was the last thing he had expected.
And then he felt fear again, at the sight of a commissar.
This was followed once more by confusion, as the commissar was cheerful and friendly.
After this came a silent joy. As the rest of the crowd began to sing a hymn. One that took Cudjal back to a better time. A time in his youth where he lived with care or worry. He knew the song well, it was his favorite. It had been so long. So with a gentle, barely visible smile, he took a breath and opened his mouth to join in.
[[Roll to sing = -2!]]
Finally, embarrassment. As he attended to sing, his already strained voice finally gave out. With a crackling croak, the sewer worker crouched over in a fit of coughing. Vernard stayed there for a moment, before lifting his sock to cover as much of the redness of his face as possible. Praying that no one noticed and that the shift would end soon.

“Nah yeah, mate, I’ll take a lift.” Prue hops up onto the runners of the wagon, hanging off the side. She calls to the tech priest, “what about you, magos? Want a ride, or will you stick with your pedilocor apparatus?” The mask hides any smirk or sarcasm that may or may not be on her face.
As she rolls back towards the gate and the crowd, she hums the carols to herself, and later pulls the mask off for some cocoa and joins in the singing.
All in all, the night could’ve been worse. That truck will probably feature in some nightmares for a while, but there’s hardly a shortage of those in a war zone.

At first, Treston was displeased to see more of the Lucifer Blacks. The previous one had brought enough issues to deal with. However as they began singing and offering hot chocolate, Adela was able to relax some. She took a cup of the steaming beverage and took a sip.
When the carolers begin to leave, the medic will make her way back to the guard house to fill out the final report. It takes her a bit to fill it out, trying to decide what needs to be said, and what could be overlooked. She decides to give a frustratingly full account of everything, save for what had already been concluded about the special truck, making sure to emphasize important details such as how cold it got and how the cows had smelled.
Nobody was going to really read it, and if they did nothing she said was technically invalid.
By the time she’s finished with her expansive report, the relief force is trickling in. She drains the remains from her now cold hot chocolate and smiles, “It is generally expected for guards to report fifteen minutes early to their posts. Though I’ve heard Firstborns prefer thirty. Of course I’ve been told that In regiments without a stick up the arse they just tell you when to show up.”
Ignoring any shocked expressions on their faces, Adela hands the log to the nearest trooper, “I’m sure the officers already have gone over this with you, but just to safe since some of you may never have been a guard at a gate like this, I’ll give you a quick rundown of your duties. “Your main job is to stay down here to hold the gate down from….”
By the time she’s done giving them her best repetition of Lieutenant Zaman’s speech when they first arrived, Treston could feel the weariness catching up to her. She gives the relief the Mordian equivalent of a half-hearted salute, which might be a regular salute to most regiments, and heads back inside, retying her scarf as she goes. She debates heading to get a drink or heading for bed. She decides on whichever one she’ll pass first.

For Ilona Bembenek, the carols brought only a stony expression. Internally she vaguely had memories of parents, of her sister . . . did she have a friend? A freckled face swam in her memory, curly black hair, crooked teeth and singing the same damned carol. Though it had only been a few short years, she now even had difficulty remembering what her mother's face looked like, let alone her father.
Forcing a thought for the day into her head, accept her lot in life. And another, A questioning mind betrays a treacherous soul. She steadied herself and remained in her position for the rest of the night, waiting only for the shift to end and to find a bunk to crawl into.
