After a sigh and a moment to contemplate the Emperor's will in this situation, Cudjal stood up and hobbled over to his helmet. After reclaiming the relic, he hobbled back to his trapped boot. The trooper placed his helmet on the ground and squatted down for a closer look. After a moment of silent observation, he began to do what he could to untangle the boot from the barrier. [[Roll to free the boot +3 for being careful = a glorious 0]] The silence didn't persist as Cudjal began to swear with each new twist within the knot of his footwear. The swearing continue to grow in volume and profanity as the situation worsened. [[Roll to swear loudly = 3]] After a few minutes, Cudjal stood up and admired his 'careful' handy work. In the short span of time, he had covered most of the known swear words on planet and in the wider imperium, not lost his voice (most likely thanks to how much he'd Actually talked today), mostly likely gained the attention of everyone on guard duty and the surrounding area and failed to make any visible changes to the mess of his boot-in-barrier. That is if he hasn't already made the knot worse. Prue stands by, impressed by the breadth of the trooper’s vulgar vocabulary. By the time Cudjal gives up she actually has a small notebook out and is writing down some of the best ones for posterity. When he finishes his tirade she asks, “how does ‘paddling a fethcanoe up gack creek barehanded’ work? And what is a canoe?” “What in Throne’s Name is going on out there?” Treston grumbles hearing all the shouting and…colorful language. She moves over to the guardhouse doorway and peers out to see the commotion. She is a bit dumbfounded by what she sees. “Oh for feth’s sake,” the medic swears as she marches out there to examine the trapped footwear, “How did this even happen?” Only half listening to any explanations, Adela crouches next to the barrier to get a better look. LanternO'Red Request: `[4df+3]` Roll: `[+, +, , -]` Result: `4`She carefully examines the laces and the boot, trying to see how it’s stuck and how to best release it from the barrier, if it is even still possible. Some things require a special touch, as Private Cudjal and everyone within earshot found as he failed to untangle his boot. The brute strength of Specialist Dekker and careful hands of Cudjal could not free it from the stalwart machine and the commotion was enough to draw the ire of their de facto leader, Specialist Treston, from the guardhouse. The skilled eyes of the medic could see what was wrong. It seemed that somehow some lace got caught in a hinge. Adela figured that if someone simply pulled the laces as they lowered the gate the boot could be freed with only a little fraying. It was unlikely to damage the mechanism or make things worse, but there was always the chance no matter how slim. If Private Bembenek ever took a glance through the gate toward the city, she’d see a slightly hunched figure in blue robes approaching in the distance from the city. It also should be noted that the ground was cold and a little wet to Vernard's bootless foot. ((Thanks to Specialist Treston, if you lower the barrier while pulling the boot it can be freed whole with no damage to the barrier with a test of target 0. Otherwise, to free it as it is now requiring a Careful or Forceful test with target of 3. Simply cutting the laces to free the boot is still an option with no test needed.))

“In my defense,” Prue mutters, “it would’ve been impossible to do that if he were still in the boot.” She drifts away from the huddle at the barrier, heading back towards the gatehouse to wait for the techpriest someplace out of the elements.

Adela sighs at Prue’s words, “You’re right, I suppose. At least it was just the boot and not his foot, Though I’d rather not have to remove Cudjal’s foot due to frostbite. I don’t think he could afford a replacement.”
She rises to her feet, and calls out to Ilona, “Lower the barricade!"
She then turns back to Cudjal, “As the barricade lowers, pull your boot free. With any luck the moving parts should allow your laces to slip free.”

“how does ‘paddling a fethcanoe up gack creek barehanded’ work? And what is a canoe?” Cudjal looked up at Pure, becoming all to aware of how openly he had shared his opinion of his snagged boot. He scratched his chin and replied "well. A canoe is a small boat. Think of the imperial navy ships, but only big enough for one or two people and make to only float on water instead of traveling the skies. As for the rest..." Before he could say anymore, Cudjal was interrupted by the angry medic's arrival. Lost between his original explanation for his vile vocabulary and an explanation for the Mordian, he proceeded to make barely recognizable words and gestures to the trapped boot. All whilst the other two actually spoke with one another. He quickly fell silent and back into his old habit of trying to be a part of the background scenery. Though the PDF trooper did lift his bare foot and rested it upon the other at the metion of frostbite amputation. Though as Adela addressed him, he would give a nod of acknowledgement and with the care of a man who probably couldn't afford a new boot, attempt to remove his one as the barrier lowered. [[Roll to remove boot with care = 5]]

“…small…boat…” Dekker finishes writing and stashes the notebook back in her coat as she makes her way back to the guardhouse. She finds a nice spot out of the weather to lean against just a breath before spotting the incoming figure in the robes. With a long-suffering sigh she stands back upright and positions herself to be the first one the techpriest meets at the gate.

Ilona was only marginally paying attention to the goings on by the barrier, but heard enough and was Mordian enough to do as commanded with perhaps admirable speed. Another button press and then she poked her head out just enough to shout "Barrier coming down!" With that, she gave a brief nod to Dekker as the other woman entered the space, and then went back to . . . staring out the window and waiting for her shift to be done.

With that, she gave a brief nod to Dekker as the other woman entered the space, and then went back to . . . staring out the window and waiting for her shift to be done. Specialist Treston continues to demonstrate why she became the de facto leader as she gave out orders. As a dutiful Mordian should, Trooper Bembenek lowered the barrier as she remained vigilant. For Private Cudjal’s part, he held onto his boot and with methodical care gently pulled his laces from the gears as they came out until the barrier was nearly all the way lowered and his boot came free. While they were slightly frayed, his laces were still strong and in one piece along with the rest of his boot. Perhaps only the angriest and perfectionist of Commissars would care to harass him on it once he got the grease off. He even managed to remain standing without setting his bootless foot onto the cold ground. Ilona would see that the barrier was still operational and there was nothing indicating it was damaged in any way. When she looked out, she saw that the man who owned the broken wagon was tending to his bright orange cows that were still easily seen in the relative dark thanks to the light from the walls. Adela would know that, with how the temperature was now and seeing Cudjal’s foot at the moment, Vernard was in no real danger of getting frostbite anytime soon unless he got his boot or sock wet.

Specialist Dekker was used to the presence of techpriests, but she’s only seen them in red robes that made them stand out. The newcomer wore blue robes which may have confused her at first, but as they got closer Prue could see the Omnissian Axe and some mechadendrites that made their identity unmistakable. As they hobbled closer, she could see that all visible metal was a dull silver. Their face was completely covered by a mask with glowing blue lenses and a pair of tubes spouting from their mouth to their chest. She could see that one large mechadendrite was folded behind them, perhaps carrying something heavy she could not see. The Techpriest would stop before Prue and a vox modulated male voice would ask, “Specialist, is this the hatch that called for aid?”

“Wotcher, magos, yeah this is the place. Civvie’s cart is broke down outside.” As a vehicle pilot, Prue spends a lot of time in the motor pool and is now quite adept at not reacting to the bizarre and inhuman modifications tech priests were so fond of. She leads the way towards the stricken vehicle, lascarbine held at a nonchalant low-ready.

Cudjal gave a sigh of relief as the boot finally came free. It still looked alright despite the whole ordeal. "Thank you." he said to Adela with a small, humble bow of his head towards her. Vernard meant every word of it too. His boots are a vital part of his income, hence a vital part of his survival.
He did make a mental note to get some better boots without laces whenever he came into enough money.
He moved to put the boot back on, though stopped as he realized his woolen sock was still damp even after his best efforts to preserve them. After a moments consideration, he removed the sock and wrapped it below his scarf. A shiver ran down his spine at the cold touch, but at least it smelt better than the scarf. With the sock now stashed away to dry via body heat, Cudjal once more began to unlace the boot to reattach it to his foot.

“Perhaps you should invest in some Gaiters,” Treston suggests, “Should help protect your laces.” She shakes her head, it had been a cold and long day. She glances towards the busted wagon briefly before checking the road for any approaching vehicles or refugees.

She leads the way towards the stricken vehicle, lascarbine held at a nonchalant low-ready. “You are too kind, Specialist. I am just a humble Tech-Priest. I would probably be a Engiseer assigned to a regiment at this moment if things were not as they are now,” he replied. Seeing him this close, Specialist Dekker can see that the Tech-Priest was carrying a wheel in his large manipulator mechadendrite. It was perhaps a bit too big for the wagon. Both Prue and Specialist Treston could see Rupert was tending to his cows when he noticed the Ork Hunter and Tech-Priest approach. “What’s all this?” he asked them. “I was told your vehicle required repairs. I have come to assist,” the Tech-Priest replied. The old man blinked in surprise. “Oh. Uh… sure,” he said, “Do what you need to. I’ll keep these out of the way. Just try not to knock any kegs out.” “Of course,” the Tech-Priest said. The manipulator would then flip so the wheel was in front of him. He’d take a bit to simply look at the wagon, during which he’d say, “Specialist, what happened to this vehicle?”

Nothing else happened that could interrupt Private Cudjal putting on his boot or Specialist Treston (and perhaps Trooper Bembenek) taking a moment to look out into the nightscape around them. The snow also seemed to have lightened up so nothing could obstruct their serene view. The village in the distance were vague silhouettes now with dots of lit windows of families celebrating the night. No movement could be seen as the world seemed content for the night. Even the cold seemed to respect the holiday as its bite lost most of its edge. It was very likely that once that wagon was gone, they were due for a peaceful rest of the shift. ((Everyone at the gate may roll a Careful or Quick test with a target of 1 to see if they hear or notice something.))

She instead turns her attention to the animals pulling the wagon. Armageddon didn’t have a lot of local fauna, so she always enjoyed meeting new kinds of beasts.

“Some toff drove ‘im off the road into the ditch, must’ve snapped the wheel.” Prue tries not to hover, curious enough to be interested in the tech priest’s work but not enough to ask questions. She instead turns her attention to the animals pulling the wagon. Armageddon didn’t have a lot of local fauna, so she always enjoyed meeting new kinds of beasts. Though he didn’t look at Specialist Dekker, the Tech-Priest would nod in response. “That is unfortunate. Even if it does not have a machine spirit, it should still get respect,” he’d lament, “This won’t take long.” Prue may not know fauna, but even she knew that these cows were not the norm. They had long, bright orange hair that covered their eyes. What was more bizarre though was that even in the darkness the hair seemed to… glow a bit. Rupert, who was tending to the cows, noticed her interest, smiled and asked, “Do you want to pet her?” At that moment they’d hear a whir and cutting sound as the Tech-Priest spun the wheel in their manipulator and shaved the edge down. He then took the wheel in his hands and used the manipulator to gently lift the wagon up as he started to put on the new wheel.
Cudjal shook his head at the Mordian's comment. "Gaiters are too short. No one saw anything at first, but Private Cudjal and Specialist Treston could hear… something. It was not the sound of snow for it stopped falling. It was coming from inside the city, and it sounded like… a lot of footsteps. If they cared to turn around, they’d see a large group of people, several squads worth if not platoon amount, coming toward them. A majority seemed to be civilians, with Trooper Brembenek being able to recognize Xavier and his daughter among them, but they could also spot some Guardsmen among them as well. At the front of the horde seemed to be a mousy haired woman with a walking stick dressed in red preacher garb.
