Genestealer Cults
History
This Cult should have died before it began.
A Genestealer brood devastated by strife and violence and, of course, time aboard a Spacehulk. The few that survived the Hulk’s brief passing of the Haven system should not have been enough to trouble the citizens of the Imperium. Fewer still survived the salvos from Imperial warships who pummeled the stray bits of debris thrown from the Spacehulk on their way towards Haven’s Garden.
This Cult should have died.
But it didn’t.
Standard Genestealers likely would not have fared so well. But, in a strange twist of fate, this Brood was led not by a standard or stereotypical Genestealer. No, it was led by one who was, to put it mildly, quite insane. At least, that is likely how others saw him; for this Genestealer, this Patriarch, knew full well the purpose of his creation and what lay at the end of the road should his nascent cult summon his creators.
He wanted none of it.
But he couldn’t exactly stop, either. To survive he needed a powerbase. So, he grew his cult slowly and sporadically as his conflicted nature battled itself; dizzying Imperial agents who attempted to get a grip on what exactly they were dealing with.
Several generations passed, and yet the cult was still relatively small. Focused mostly in the agricultural and mining communities of Haven’s Garden, when the Great Rift tore the galaxy asunder and all manner of violence broke out in the system the Patriarch realized that in this disaster was a blessing hidden.
Sections of his cult were discovered, of course, but due to it being so small and unordinary the Imperium misjudged the level and creativity of the cult. After purging the local PDF forces of what they assumed were all of his brood they turned their attention to the more prevalent threats of Chaos and the Tau.
They were mistaken. His brood was far from gone. The Patriarch had settled upon a different strategy than most cults of old. His cult’s ranks were largely still human by his own design. Nothing giving away their intentions. Nothing so obvious as carrying the next wave of Genestealers. Those chosen to further the cult’s generations were protected and secreted away in the mountains. Their spawn, their “children” as he insisted they be called, were kept to the mines and away from prying eyes.
It was here that his “insanity” was most prominent. He operated his cult like an insurgency, sans the mental control and linking that other cults were known for. By design or deformity, he did not seem to utilize such psychic powers in any way except the most basic such as ensuring his followers did not balk at the sight of he or the more alien members of the cult.
Instead of calling his followers to worship a far-off god or gods and praying for the day of their arrival he called his Cult to worship a form of animism of his own design. Their god was the planet itself and he was its avatar from the depths. Those who carried the next generation of the Cult were “chosen to birth the Planet’s warriors to aid them in their struggle”. He preached that the Imperium itself was not evil, but misguided. Chaos was a stain and the Tau were worshippers of a bigger, more bully like god planet suitably “far away”.
Left to their own devices for many months since the coming of the Rift, the Cult of the God Planet has now grown in size; worshipping the planet and the “Father” as he chooses to style himself. Fiercely loyal by dent of a twisted sort of charisma and the barest traces of psychic use, they emulate a more traditional Genestealer Cult in ferocity and tenacity. However, they also lack many of the telltale signs of said cult, and are able to pass more ably into their targets to preach of their terrestrial god and sow the seeds of discord against those who do not worship the correct god.
Genestealer Forces on Haven’s Garden
The Genestealer forces are largely made up of pure humans, with a helping of 2nd and 3rd generation neophytes. The majority of their powerbase (which is still quite small compared to the other factions) is focused in the mountainous mining communities and the agricultural sectors of the planet. Here they show an almost entirely human face, keeping the more monstrous cult members in the mines and only sending them out on the most dire of missions.
For the most part, all of the Cult have at least a vague idea that they are led by the so-called “Father”. But are practically led by the entirely human figure of Sarah Lackner, a born and raised native of the planet largely known for her no-nonsense attitude and concern over the miner’s wellbeing.
They are inventively equipped, to say the least. Modifying mining and agri gear into weaponry, often decorating their vehicles in colorful graffiti known as “prayers of the planet”. At their very core is a small brood of purestrain Genestealers (What they think of their Patriarch’s behavior is unknown but they do seem to follow his orders) as well as a helping of PDF broodbrothers who bring with them the gear and training of the Imperial Guard.
Rules For Genestealer Character Creation
- No Purestrain Genestealers
- Characters with a military or resistance bent can lead small squads of NPC’s
- PC’s can play one vehicle and its crew, no vehicle squadrons
- The majority of the Cult is under only a subtle mind control, and thus can behave more like autonomous resistance forces than a Cult if wished
- Obvious mutations need admin approval (with the caveat that depending on setting, an obvious mutation will likely set the Guard, or Tau, or Chaos forces on you)
